Stasia Sanchez

Over the course of the year, I have followed a sustained investigation studying the female form. My goal was to show the beauty of women in a less objectifying way. I decided on this topic because it is one I can relate to as a woman and it's the change I want to enact in society. At the beginning of my investigation I found myself portraying body parts rather than actual women, which I felt was taking away from my goal because I was still objectifying them. I began to steer myself in the direction of giving these women faces and identities to make them more realistic and not just someone you'd see on the cover of a magazine. The subjects of my later pieces became girls I knew personally and one was even a self portrait to portray myself in a realistic, unglamorized light. I also explored less conventional angles for my pieces to demonstrate a more realistic approach to showing these women.

I tried to explore my capabilities with several mediums for my pieces, I've worked with oil paint, watercolor, acrylic, oil pastel, colored pencil, and charcoal. I prefer working in bright vibrant colors, so most of my pieces demonstrate that and include the three primary colors: red, yellow, and blue. I found that to be a very unique style to me and my work. I find colors to be the most beautiful part of the world because they give so much meaning and feelings to everything they touch. To me, portraying women in these vibrant colors is how I can succeed in my goal of demonstrating their beauty to the world. Overall, my pieces were to portray real women in their real beauty because women aren't objects, but real people.
